Why You Should Avoid Potting in Nursing Pots

Planting from seed takes a little patience up front, but a tree planted from seed will quickly outgrow potted transplants. Why? Having been grown in a pot, container trees have issues with their root system. They often get stunted, tangled, and begin to choke the tree. This restricts the growth and health of a tree and is difficult to correct. Even with proper transplanting, container trees take 2-5 years to overcome root damage. With direct sowing, extensive root systems can be established more quickly which supports faster growth above ground. Here’s what to do next to give your acorns the best start!

Ready to Grow Your Oak Tree? Here’s How!

Your acorns have been carefully stratified and are ready to burst into life! You’ll notice the acorns have split and may have a root (called the radicle) peeking out-this is the start of something amazing. But handle with care! The radicle is delicate and breaking it will prevent growth.

Time to Plant:

  1. Plant with Purpose: Dig a hole about an inch deep and gently place the acorn inside, making sure the radicle is pointing downwards. This helps the root grow straight into the soil.
  2. Cover and Protect: Lightly cover the acorn with soil and water it well. Keeping the soil moist is key-just enough to prevent it from drying out.

Protect Your Seedlings:

Once your acorns are tucked in, it’s time to think about protection. Sprouted nuts and young seedlings are a tasty treat for deer and other animals. To keep them safe:

  • Use a tomato cage wrapped with screening.
  • Or, fashion a tube out of hardware cloth (a sturdy metal mesh) to create a protective barrier.

As the seedlings outgrow their initial protection, it’s important to give them a larger cage to protect from deer browse and rub. Don’t let your efforts go to waste! A good rule of thumb is to protect trees until the lowest branches are 5-6 feet off the ground.

Watering Wisdom:

For the first 2-3 years, keep your seedlings well-watered, especially during dry spells. Consistent moisture helps establish strong roots and sets the stage for healthy, vigorous growth above ground.

With a little care and patience, you’ll soon have a thriving oak tree that will stand tall for generations!
