BridgeCLE

Successful replacement of green infrastructure at The Bridge Avenue School in Clark-Fulton neighborhood.

Project Summary

The BridgeCLE Paver Retrofit Project was a refresh of the 2014 installation of grass pavers at the BridgeCLE campus; after nearly a decade of use, the plastic in these old grass pavers was failing, resulting in the grass becoming rutted with mud and gravel, and limiting porosity. With funding from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), new permeable pavers were installed to replace the failing grass pavers, and new plumbing was installed to divert rooftop runoff from The Bridge Avenue School building to a dispersion swale connecting to these new pavers.

West Creek supported this project by writing the grant application to NEORSD and serving as the fiscal agent and project manager to support successful project completion. This project exemplifies our belief in progress through partnership and demonstrates how creative collaborations can result in meaningful conservation wins in urban areas.

Project Partners

This project was made possible through a collaborative partnership between BridgeCLE (a ministry of the Bay Presbyterian Church), West Creek Conservancy, Big Creek Connects, OHM Advisors and F. Buddie Contracting, with funding from NEORSD’s Green Infrastructure Grant program.

Outcomes and Benefits

The upgraded stormwater control measures will collect rainwater from the 7,000 sq. ft. school roof, the 4,630 sq. ft. asphalt parking lot, and the 4,350 sq. ft. permeable paver area. As a result, an estimated 322,000 gallons of rainwater will be diverted annually in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, supporting regional efforts to reduce stormwater runoff in the combined sewer system and protect water quality in Lake Erie.
