Project Summary
The Grand River Wildlife Area is a 7,664-acre semi-wilderness area in the Grand River valley, managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife for wildlife habitat and public hunting and fishing. The Grand River and five of its tributaries meander through the wildlife area, buffered by expansive swamp forests, upland hardwood forest, and openland and cropland managed to benefit wildlife.
The Fox Riparian Protection Project entailed the acquisition and protection of a 235-acre tract of land surrounded on three sides by the Grand River Wildlife Area, containing high-quality wetlands and streams including a segment of the Grand River. The property had previously been sought for acquisition by ODNR to add to the Grand River Wildlife Area, but previous attempts at negotiation with the landowner had proven unsuccessful. The property was eventually put for sale on the private market, at which point West Creek sprung to action.
With funding from the ODNR Division of Wildlife and the H2Ohio Rivers program, West Creek was able to acquire the property in September, 2025. Ultimately, this expansive natural area will be transferred to ODNR for long-term ownership and management as part of the Grand River Wildlife Area, providing permanent habitat protection and responsible management as well as opportunities for public recreation including hunting, fishing, hiking and bird watching.
Project Partners
The Fox Riparian Protection Project was made possible through the partnership between West Creek Conservancy and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Expected Outcomes and Benefits
The successful conservation of this 235-acre natural area ensures permanent protection of the property’s diverse and high-quality habitat, including wetlands, streams, and the meandering Grand River providing habitat for colonies of beavers, river otters, and many fish species. The property also provides critical nesting and migratory stopover habitat for many waterfowl and other bird species.
By adding 235 acres to the Grand River Wildlife Area, the Fox Riparian Protection Project expands opportunities for public hunting and fishing, hiking, bird watching and more. Additionally, protection of the property’s aquatic resources helps preserve water quality throughout the wildlife area and the larger Grand River watershed.
