The Stearns Native Nursery
West Creek Conservancy has been hard at work creating a sustainable native plant nursery to grow our own native plants and trees with the goal of increasing the urban canopy. The Stearns Urban Educational Tree Nursery is located at Stearns Homestead, a 48-acre site located in the heart of Parma. The farm is run by West Creek Conservancy in partnership with the City of Parma, Cuyahoga County, and the Cuyahoga soil and Water District.
In addition to serving as a working nursery, it will also provide sustainability education by teaching others the many economic, health, and social benefits of living sustainably with nature.
A 1.5 acre field has been cleared for propagation where trees can grow to diameter of approximately 2 inches. These trees will be used in future restoration projects throughout the region. A deer exclosure is being installed in mid-October to protect the trees from deer browse and a hoop house is scheduled to be installed in December. This will be used to propagate local, native tree and wildflower species.
Other infrastructure plans are being developed, but in order to bring this vision to life West Creek Conservancy will need your support!
